We could get into the geology of this but the takeaway is that marble is vulnerable to staining agents like wine juice and oil that seep deep into. Marble is not very absorbent so it does not stain easily. Mold can stain marble bathroom countertops floors etc. Many people just start experimenting and end up with bad etch marks or corrosion of the stone finish.

Hard water stains and deposits can be a maddening problem and if you have granite or marble countertops you need to be very particular about the product you choose to use. A marble stain is when a substance is absorbed into the pores of the marble. Marble is a porous high maintenance surface. These stains can be the result of a water glass that was left on a marble countertop for too long or from hard water buildup around sinks and showers.

We tried on one occasion to remove some of the etching spots by purchasing an expensive product to remove them around 75 but that didn t work at all. Water that contains high levels of calcium and magnesium carbonates is known as hard water and it can easily stain marble countertops. This is because the pores are closed down in the polishing process. Once hard water minerals build up on marble tiles or slabs the resulting stains can be difficult to remove under some circumstances.

For instance a cultured marble sink gets a large brown stain. Where did it come from. Mold is a common problem in many bathroom settings. The three main issues with marble etching stains were never ever a problem for us mainly just the etching.

Marble is more porous than other common countertop materials like engineered stone sold often as simply quartz or soapstone so it can be prone to staining and etching a k a light scratching.
